WHO are you chipped with?

Recommended Posts

I have Usher chipped with Avid.

Also a lot of people don't know that once you chip a pet you have to register it with the company or it will go to your vet. Just want to make sure, I KNOW you aren't stupid, but when I got Bailey at the IHS they said "No, there's nothing else you have to do-" BS!! There is!! I made 2 comments regarding this, knowing it to be true. Thank doG my vet and techs are smart. The IHS said Bailey was chipped twice, yet they only detected one...........hmmmmmm.

BTW.... I know there is at least one person here with a service dog. I forgot their name- sorry, but AVID chips your dog for free with a note from your doc and proof that they are a SD or SDIT. It'll save you $18.50.. I don't know about therapy dogs, but give it a try.

Bailey is with 24petwatch. Who knows what is better?

I don't know what Jaida is... guess I should find out - she came chipped from shelter, back when it was still new.

I had River chipped at the vet with Avid and registered by me. Diesel is HomeAgain which I contacted and had him transfered to me from his prior owner.

Both mine are AVID, which I think is the predominant format in Los Angeles county. Here's my microchipping tip: though I didn't get either dog from the shelter, I took both to the shelter to have the chips implanted there, where it only costs $25 per dog, and that includes both the implantation procedure and the lifetime registration fee to put your owner's information in the AVID database--they have you fill out a form to send to AVID right at the time of the implantation, and they even send it in for you! I received receipts in the mail several months later confirming the information, along with some handy $2.00-off coupons if I ever needed to change the database information, which normally costs $6.00 per dog. So, I know that it went through correctly. I also felt good that the money I spent helped to support shelter animals. As a bonus, if my dogs ever get lost and are picked up by the pound, their microchip data will already be in their computer system, right alongside their city licensing information, so I would imagine/hope that they would be returned to me that much more quickly.

In contrast, if my vet were to have done the microchipping, it would have been $60 for the exact same implantation procedure, per dog, and then an additional $25 AVID registration fee, per dog....and then my money would have been spent to help maintain my vet's shiny Mercedes.

BTW, I think the shelter only charges $15 for the whole thing if the dogs are actually adopted from the shelter.

AVID here! I work at a shelter so I got my 'chips for cheap. I don't like thought, that you have to call or mail the company to change your info. I would like to be able to do it online. Homeagain, i believe you can do it online.

You will occasionally find a bored shelter worker scanning themselves with that shifty "the government is out to get me" look in their eyes...

Yeah, i've done it, and no chip.

so far.

That's one reason I had Usher tattoo'd. Even though they said Bailey was chipped twice, they could only pick up one #. Also, at the shelter, when you adopt-they say it's fine, but you DO have to go re-register with your name and addy & phone and remember if........you change your address and phone, put that on the front of your list, before you even change your gas bill........your pet's come first!!!!!!

Avid- One was done by a breeder and the other BC (rescue) not sure who did that chip . Around here it seems that if the vet does it it is home again though some do use Avid(had one dog chipped that way), but if a breeder does it it is Avid. Shelters and rescues seem to go w/ home again as well though I can't speak for all of them in the area.

One is reg. w/ both AVID and Home Again(need to reg. the other w/ home again). I did that because Home Again offers services that Avid does not include such as helping to locate your pet and sending out notices to shelters etc.

If you have AVID and reg. w/ home again the dog does not receive another chip. You simply tell them which chip your dog has and the number.

Hmm... has anyone heard of M4S ID? That's who Molly is chipped with. Mickey isn't chipped.

Because of this thread I was looking at getting a microchip for Gypsy - her adoption came with free spay and tattoo (among other things) but I got her from a local shelter (D'Arcy's ARC) and they don't include a microchip like the Humane Society does. I never even thought about it till now, she's always got her collar on with ID tags & license, but there's always that "What If". We use Birchwood Animal Hospital (it's a 2 min walk from my house ) and I checked their website tonight and they have a link to the M4S site. I'm gonna call her vet and see if I can get her an appointment sometime soon to get one. Do you know how much they charge?

You have to transfer ownership from the vets to you- Don't forget that! and they DO charge. And remember if you should die, doG forbid, do you have someone that you have to transfer ownership too- wow, am I picky!!! I have it it writing and on file. Yes, Usher has an inheritor. LOL.

That's good that Usher has an inheritor. I'm sure that others on the board have thought of this as well, but many people don't. Esp. younger healthy people but no one knows how much time they have on this earth. I've seen dogs who ended up in a rescue or shelter because someone died and a family member didn't want the dog. We have discussed this in my immediate family, and one of us would just take the others animals as we have worried about it as well.

Some people are strange about the chips. My one dog's breeder told me that she has the dog chipped, but many people don't follow though. I have also read this elsewhere, about the percentage of owners who don't registrar the chip. I have a friend who has a dog w/o an ID tag. Apparently he lost his because at one point he had one. They never got him another one, he runs all over the place loose. I told her that he needed a new ID tag and a chip. She said that she hates chips, she thinks it's weird. But I'll tell you she'll be upset if he goes missing one day and isn't returned though it would really be her fault.

This is good to know. Kat has an Avid chip and so I never registered her with HomeAgain. Now I guess I will. Mine are all also tattooed and have name plates on their collars--nothing like covering all the bases....

Milo and Skittles are chipped with Avid. Charlie is chipped with Home Again. Milo and Charlie were chipped by the vet and I got whatever the vet was using. Skittles was chipped by me. I buy preloaded syringes from Avid and also buy prepaid registrations. When a foster dog is adopted, I send in the registration form and give a copy to the adopter. On the form, I list myself as the primary contact and the adopter as the secondary contact. As a primary contact, my information can never be removed from the database by anyone other than me. That way, I know that I will always be contacted even if the adopter moves and decides not to update their registration with Avid. Of course, if I move, I'm going to have to update my information (at a price) for all of the dogs that I have registered. Buying the chips directly from Avid is cheaper (around $10, less if you buy in bulk) and the prepaid registrations are also cheaper (another $10) than if I did it through my vet.
