BustopherJones
For those of you who have been so kind as to provide support in the sitaution with Missy over the last several months, here is an update. She has been holding her own against the cancer and Cushings Disease, thanks to weekly visits to the vet and special shots; while her condition does in fact worsen gradually, it has been slow, and she still enjoys a good qaulity of life. On her visit last week, however, the vet found that Missy has developed a heart murmur; we may be able to have her through Christmas, but the odds are 50-50 right now. I hope that our baby will still be with us for the holidays; otherwise, it will be a dismal holiday season, after having had her for 13 years. Our vet loves both of our dogs, and will tell us when the time has come to do what is best for Missy. Again, thanks to all who have been so supportive. KrisK
I'm sorry to hear about Missy's condition. I'm sending good thoughts to you and Missy. I hope she continues to hold her own for a while yet.
Bordercentrics
We pray that Missy will be with you for Christmas. We lost a dog on Christmas Eve day one year, and Christmas has never been the same around here. But you know, it doesn't matter when it happens, it is VERY hard anyway. sandra s.
I'm so sorry, and I hope she stays with you for a while yet ! Reading all the heartbreaking stories of "owner surrenders", and knowing these are normal everyday scenarios, I know that if I was granted one free wish, it would be that I may manage to stay with Kessie from one end of her journey to the other without screwing up and letting her down like our species is so prone to do. Let me only do right by her and I'll be happy with my life even without any other accomplishments. I hope you find some comfort in knowing you have done all that for Missy (and will continue to do so to the end). It's not to be taken for granted (and dogs know that better than anyone else). bc friend
Missy has been a tough old gal and put up a heck of a fight against not one but two serious diseases. Hopefully her quality of life will remain good through the holidays but it's a true blessing to have a vet that will help you make the right decisions for Missy. Missy and your family will be in my prayers.

Tassie
That's tough, Bustopher. You guys have been so caring and have done such a good job with Missy. The end will be tough whenever it comes - but she's a lucky girl to have a team that will make the right decision for her. Positive thoughts coming your way from the land down under Down Under. Bo Peep
I hope that Missy makes it, but if she doesn't, rest well, that you have done all you can for her and sometimes the kindest thing is to let her go. I have had to do this too many times. Personally, I have no regrets. I miss them like crazy, but every border collie that I owned was loved, taken care of and let go of pain when "they" told me it was time. Missy will tell you, too. My heart goes out to you. BustopherJones
I have had to do this too many times. I know the feeling; I also have had to do it too many times. When the time comes, I will take a day off from work to go with DW to the vet's office, so that we can all be together. This will be especially hard on DW, as Missy is her baby. I printed out the following poem for DW, which I will give her when the day comes: If it should be that I grow weak, And pain should keep me from my sleep, Then you must do what must be done, For this final battle cannot be won. You will be sad, I understand. Don't let your grief then stay your hand. For this day, more than all the rest, Your love for me must stand the test. We've had so many happy years, What is to come can hold no fears. You'd not want me to suffer so. The time has come, please let me go. Take me where my need they'll tend And please stay with me until the end. Hold me firm and speak to me Until my eyes no longer can see. I know in time that you will see The kindness that you did for me. Although my tail its last has waved, From pain and suffering I have been saved. Please do not grieve it must be you Who had this painful thing to do. We've been so close, we two these years, Don't let your heart hold back its tears. Samantha J
So Sorry Bustopher. I couldn't read your poem just now as i am chocked already about your Missy. I hope she remains with you for Christmas if she is well enough. She is a very lucky girl to have you and your wife as her family. *Hugs* to you and your family. sea4th
So sorry to hear this. That same poem has helped me through some doubtful times. She's had a great life with you.
iluvlucy
Bustopher i'm glad to hear that u will go with her all the way. nothing irritates me as much as someone who abandons their dog to the vet to be euthanized. ii feel its the last thing we can do for them.
