sluj
There are a few upcoming trials I'd like to go watch, but I haven't been able to find out what times they start and finish. (Did find dates and directions: http://home.earthlink.net/~sjvbca/events.html ) I emailed the contact listed, but hadn't yet gotten a reply, so thought I would check here if anyone knew. It's the one on the 28th of this month. While I'm at it, anyone going to this one or Point Pleasant SDT( Nov 9-11, - Elk Grove, CA) or Thompson Ranch Sheepdog Trial, (Nov 16-18 Auburn, CA) (times also unknown to me!) - would love to meet up! SoloRiver
I entered the co-trial being held that weekend (Kurajong) but will probably be at Dunigan though not running. I entered Point Pleasant and am sending my entry for Auburn tomorrow. If you come, you can see me and Fly crash and burn in our first Open trials. [/quote Can't tell you about the 28th trial. But if you email folks at Pt Pleasant you will get a quick responce from them. I am going to be scribing there as they do not have a P/N class for me to enter. That is a trial you should try and watch--should be good. I believe it starts at 9 am, but email to be sure. I am going to check in before the date just to make sure I am not late! I am entering Thompson Ranch today. Maybe we from this board can meet each other there? I will ( hopefully) get into P/N and my dog is Lyn, a rather small smooth coat tri color female. Carolyn
SoloRiver
Lens recommendations? A long fast zoom lens (to at least 300mm or thereabouts) with good autofocus. I don't have one, but I make do. I have a slow 55-200mm zoom and in my opinion it is too short. The autofocus is OK, and it's fast enough for bright daylight, which most sheepdog trial photos are taken in. But I wish it were longer, and the fact that I don't have a longer lens is the reason why I take very few close-ups of dogs. Of course, working around the equipment you have can do interesting things for your style (mine is more "photojournalistic" than "dog portrait" because I am more or less forced to do the former given my equipment), but all things being equal I'd rather have a longer lens.
