Guest pax
When I married my husband he didn't have a single animal in his sterile house. Not a single one. He comes from a pretty staid, conservative, white glove kind of background. I have to say though, that the man stepped up. He tries hard. Sometimes he gets it dead wrong, but he's trying, enthusiastically. It started slowly...ignoring the dog hair on his clothes. Pretending he didn't see a chewed up thing. Petting whatever head showed up in his lap and almost inevitably calling it by the wrong name. But with Naimh...you know, I thought she was supposed to be mine. Something moved me powerfully when I saw her, I don't know what it was, but apparently it was the right thing to do because now those two are inseperable. He takes her out into the back garden for "practice". I have no idea what he's practicing for but he's got a really good recall and an ok lie down on her. (Of course, it helps that all she wants is a belly scratch, no matter what else is going on.) Mostly the practice seems to involve him giving her treats and her getting rubbies. Last night when I went to take everyone out before bed, I couldn't find her anywhere. I was calling and when I went into his workshop to see if she was there...there she was, under his feet, under his bench. On a blanket his mother knitted and which I've never been able to use for ANYTHING because it was his mother's. He'd crawled under there and made her a nest. This morning it was 50-ish degrees and he came to me in all seriousness and asked me, since Naimh had come from Texas, maybe she would be too cold here and maybe he'd just look on line for a blanket for her to wear, like the horses do. I almost always get up first and this morning when I went back to bring him coffee he was in bed with Starr on one side and Naimh on the other, his arms around both, all three snoring. The man is 60 years old and he's a boy with his first dog. It warms my heart.
Little Bo Boop
Ahhhhh, that is just too cute ;-) My husband wasn't quite that bad, he did have dogs, but not really in the house, and talk about sterile oh my, it didn't even look like anybody even lived in his house, we're talking scary clean and neat (well scary for a bit of a pig pen like myself ;-) ) Now its five Border Collies in the house, one sleeps with us every night...cats...the horses the sheep ;-) it is pretty cute when they get that serious look on their faces, thinking they need to get something for one of the animals...be it a blanket or bed for the dog, extra hay in the winter for my old horse...a shelter for the sheep lol Gotta love it ;-)
Guest WoobiesMom
Awwwwwwww And that's why you got her! You just didn't know it at the time.
BCBERRI
I can totally relate Celia. My hubby was raised tha same way. Now that we have 3 in the house under foot he is a changed man. I have even started to talk about a new pup and he didn't say no! The first dog took 3 years straight of begging. The next one only 2 and the 3rd one I just brought home and he never questioned it! It amazes me how the dogs can just win your heart. Even someone who has never had that before.
Olivia
That is wonderful!!!! Our boy dog, Griffin, is my husband's dog. I train and show him in obedience and agility and work sheep with him but he and my husband are buddies. Any time Chris is outside in his workshop Griffin is with him. Just lying there watching. If he is out fixing the fence, Griffin is right beside him. Chris did have a dog as a kid but he says that Griffin brings a whole new dimension to having a dog. The blanket thing is funny. Chris came to an agility show last February in NC and noticed that several of the dogs walking around were wearing horse-type blankets. He declared that our guys must need them too and went on line in search of a new blanket for his bud. Guys with their dogs are precious. Make sure they get plenty of 'practice' time together. I bet it's good for all of your souls. Olivia
MaryP
Awe, that's so cute. They look sooo sweet together. It actually made me a little teary-eyed because I can relate. My bf has had a similar experience. His family never had dogs while he was growing up and he never had any desire to get one as an adult. He met me when he was 42 years old and had his first experience with having a dog. In fact, he impressed me by suggesting that we take my dog along on our second date. Now, almost 4 years later, we have three dogs and anywhere from 2-3 fosters at any one time. He even survived raising a border collie puppy - his first experience with a puppy ever! He now tries to give other people advice about feeding and training (though his advice is not always quite right), and he spends time with the fosters trying to teach them basic obedience. Here are a few pictures of him loving on the fosters and our own dogs.

Guest TheRuffMuttGang
Celia wrote this to me the other day in email and it made me cry. Now she's gone and done it to me AT WORK and that, my friend, just ain't cool! Okay, maybe it's okay...this once...'cause that picture is so damn cute. I'm waiting for the "I caught them tormenting my sheep today" email any day now. And for guys...my goal is to find one that's already got as many dogs as I do...or, at least close. This, however, is proving to be a difficult feat to accomplish.

2 Devils
That is a aweet story. My husband was raised with dogs in the house but he prefers they not get on the furniture, they don't sleep in bed, etc... Well the acd turned him around. He fought and fought allowing her to sleep in the bed but she won. He then bought her a blamket for the bed because she gets "chilled" at night. Then Charlotte started sleeping in the bed and of course she had to have a blamket too. Then little Aspen slept in bed but he curls up with me. So we used to have 2 adults and 3 dogs in bed and the hubby is the one who kept buying the dog blankets (Charlotte is gone now but Foster and Aspen still sleep in bed - the other 2 are in crates). He was the first to break all his house rules with the dogs. He is such a sucker. My hubby is so concerned about Foster's bad leg he now wants her to go back to the ortho vets and if needed have a MRI done. If the leg can be surgically fixed I guess it will be... no matter the cost

NorthfieldNick
Well, I doubt I'll ever find Scott snuggling with a dog, and the BC drives him bananas (which I understand- Nick drives me nuts most of the time too, but in a good way:) ). However, when I was back east visiting faimly, Lu the mutt dog won over his heart. She completely ignores what he asks her to do- she does that with almost anyone but me- but I'll be damned if he doesn't go all sweet when she noses his knee. I don't care if he never wants the dogs to sleep with us- *I* don't want that! I hate having dogs on the bed. I'm not sure Scott knows what he's in for this spring when lambing starts, though... I doubt I'll be as alucky as last year & manage to not have any bottle lambs in the house! LOL!
ShoresDog
What a wonderful set of posts! Naimh has found her true home, and her relationship with Pax's spouse resonates with so many of us.
