Brandon M
I have put together items I may need in the case of an emergency for myself, such as water and food and stuff, but I hadn't thought, until today, to get anything for my dog. After a search on the Internet I found this: 44-piece Standard Emergency Preparedness Kit for Dogs Is it missing anything I might need? I also have a good first aid kit. ETA: The most likely emergency situation where I live would be a wild fire.
bc4pack
There are a couple of things I would add but it's stuff particular to your dog. ie copy of vet records, maybe a memory card with recent photos or if you have a camera phone(?)...take a pic or two. What you need for fires ....and short notice .... will be different than what I need for a 2day or longer notice for hurricanes...
OurBoys
Excellent idea, bc4pack! We don't have a problem with hurricanes or wildfires but we like to go hiking every once in awhile. Since Jake is thunderphobic and once pulled a houdini, we definitely need to keep recent photos.
smileyzookie
My agility trainer gave me a list of things for first aid kits...ONLY use your kit till you can get to a vet..... If you have varying weights you may want to write appropriate dosage for each dogs weight on an index card and tape it to the lid. Also keep photocopy of vaccination records, emergency contact info, and rabies cert. Also a card indicating the brand/dosage of heartworm preventative and what day its administered. Contents Cotton gauze bandage wrap, 1" & 2" widths Vet Wrap, 2"& 4" width Roll cotton batting First-Aid Tape Ace Bandage Eye-rinsing solution (saline) Cotton gauze dressing pads 3"x3" Small Bottle of 3% Hydrogen peroxide Regular and Butterfly Bandaids Canine rectal thermometer Vaseline (for ^^^) Cotton swabs or Q-Tips Spcific meds your dog needs Antibiotic ointment for eyes Antibiotic ointment for skin (Neosporin) Betadine solution for fresh cuts Panalog Alcohol swabs Benadryl or similar Ascription (Buffered asprin) Activated charcoal tabs (absorb tummy material after induced vomiting) Bach Rescue Remedy (get at healh food store) Iodine tablets Ear cleaning solution Bar of antibacterial soap Pepto-Bismol tablets Immodium (Loperamide HCL) New-Skin liquid bandage Gentocin topical spra or a hydrocortisone topical spray Epsom salts Hot Spot remedy Needle and Thread Safety pins in several sizes Space Blanket Velcro Muzzle (or gauze roll) Syringe w/o needle (to administer meds, ear solution, rinse wounds ect) Single edge razor blade small, blunt-end scissors Matches Tweezers Wet Ones (disposable moist towelettes) small hand towels Disposable razor (shave wound) Hemostat (pulling ticks, thorns, splinters cactus needles, porcupine quills) Instant ice packs (2) Shoestrings (tourniquet) Large plastic bag (ziplock type) to hold water. If you live around snakes, snakebite kit. If your dog has allergies to stings see if your vet will give you any info on things you'll need in emergency. Restock your kit at least once a year and check expiration dates. Make sure everything is labeled and has exp. date. Tape a card to inside of box with common meds and specific dosages. Example.. -Benadryl: 1-2mg per lb every 8 hours (60lb dog, 2-4 24 mg tabs every 8 hours) -Aspirin: 5mg per lb. every 12 hrs. (one 300mg tablet per 60lb dog every 12 hrs.) -Hydrogen Peroxide to induce vomiting: 1-3 tsp. every 10 min till dog vomits -Pepto-Bismol: 1tsp. per 5 lb per 6 hrs.
