Breed ID help for a rescue

Recommended Posts

I was going to say the same thing. That is a big belly.

Is it a puppy? The hind legs seem much longer than the front (growing puppy thing...)

The first picture I was ready to say "looks BC to me!" but then the seconded picture. I don't have a clue.

maybe she's part schipperke? They are a little stocky.

That's a joke, right?

Paula, do you know what area she is from? The more I look at her, the less like a BC she looks to me, though again - I've been wrong before! But I have noticed that there are a lot of what appear to be Pharoah Hound and Ibizan Hound mixes in particular areas of California. I was surprised to learn it's not uncommon to cross them with bullies (?). Those ears though!

Though this dog, again, unless she is pregnant, does not have the torso of a sighthound, or a lurcher.

RDM, I'll ask, but her rescuer lives in Indiana, so it's the midwest somewhere.

Christina thinks she's around 7 months old. She's hoping she's not pregnant (but I told her it's a possibility), just wormy. She was dewormed last night. What else? Still a pup but has her adult teeth.

I think she's really cute, except for that big belly!

Oh, Liz, how beautiful! I'm glad you posted those, since I noticed the rescue puppy doesn't have a white ruff, and I wondered...but I see yours didn't either.

I showed her this picture of a previous rescue. The first shot reminds me of Ranger's profile.

ETA: I totally agree there is something off with her torso/hind end. By off, I mean doesn't look BCish. Who knows?

Liz, I know BCs come in red smooth coat - that's not the reason the dog doesn't look BC to *me* anyway. What looks wrong to me is the shape of the torso (and even for a wormy dog, its extreme), the shallow chest, the complete absence of tuck; also the relatively roman nose (not a lot of stop going on there). And even for a smooth coat, that dog is really smooth, doesn't even appear to have an ruff whatsoever. Mind you, if she is a pup that could explain it.

I also agree with Julie that the hind end is quite strange indeed.

I think we all know this is all pure speculation, as border collies can look like a lot of things, but I'm put in mind of something Rebecca said once - to paraphrase, it's something like "I don't know what it is, but I know what it isn't." More than a few things look a little off about that dog, to me. Kinda like Boy.

That's not to say that if a local shelter sent me a picture I wouldn't pull her as a BC. And maybe once I had her in person I'd see she was. But just from the photos, which are all I have, the dog don't look right

AKB - I was just teasing you. But schipperkes (a breed I personally loathe) are toy dogs with small ears and short necks, with a double coat who, I believe, only come in black.

Yeah, my smooth coat red BC had almost no white on her. People who didn't know BCs insisted she was a Lab x Husky.

Wormy puppies tend to have atrophied looking muscles and weird growth patterns. She does kind of remind me of some Border x Staffie mixes I have met. But why the bobbed tail? That is why I am guess at a farm dog special, mostly BC with some Cattle Dog in there. Maybe she is a little younger than 7 months and just in the middle of an awkward growth spurt.

She is from Indianapolis Animal Control. Christina was going to pull a border collie there yesterday, and this little girl was on the PTS list. She couldn't leave her there, so she was pulled also. AC had her listed as a pit bull, BTW. That I don't see!

So do Tweeds!! First he grew lengthwise, to the degree where I was starting to worry he was a corgi. Then when he reached full length, he deigned to grow up ... hind end first. You could've skied down his ass and right off the top of his head. A friend of my said he looked like "a Disney rat." Eventually his front end caught up with him and he is quite proportionate, though Uncle RDF calls him a "pin head" - his coat grows straight out from his body and is neither long nor short, giving him the appearance of being a very stocky dog with a teeny little head. Poor Tweed.

Wick is going to be VERY upset that I am posting such an unflattering photo of her. This was taken somewhere en route to her eventual foster home with RDM. I think she is a day away from whelping out 11 pups:

It didn't take her long to get her figure back though! Now she has the teeniest waist, and no sign of those unsightly boobs!

I think I see some of this though.
