Poppy Collasped at the Park Today

Recommended Posts

Were there ever any signs before that you might have not noticed but now seem to be related to this?

I posted here about it last summer, but we all thought it was just because his play style was so much rougher than Pepper's.

Yes his symptoms are that he wears out very easily. Easily fatigued (we thought it was his thyroid but it isn't).

He sleeps alot. Drinks alot of water, compared to Pepper, but only when they play ball with the chuck it!(they always have unlimited water).

He gets overheated way easier than Pepper. (and yes yesterday he actually was a little overheated). Gets shakey after play, no matter how often he rests. And would sometimes stuble a bit for a minute. But vet's just wouldn't listen to me.

Perhaps your vet should check for Supraventricular Tachycardia (or the canine equivalent). In this condition, the heart races, and blood pressure cannot be maintained; it is often marked by the onset of the types of symptoms that you describe.

Overheating may be an issue but the vet wouldn't be hearing something funny about his heart unless there was something funny about his heart. The good news is you caught it early so there's a lot more they can do about it. Let us know what happens.

Thank you very much for the link. It really does sound like what Popcorn has.

And yes he did get overheated too,(the vet said from the heart thing most likely) so that made it worse. Pepper drank hardly any water and was fine. Barely winded too.

The only thing is, is that the E vet did hear a heart noise that isn't regular.

And it says on that link you gave me, that in dogs who have the EIC, their symptom are unremarkable. So I'm not sure but will be sure and ask the vet we are to go to for the dopplar test.

I'm not sure if this will work - http://www.bordercollie.org/boards/index.p...c=5088&st=0 it's an old thread with some info on EIH - the original poster posted the info from Dr. Taylor to us that she got. If the link doesn't work just do a search on the boards under Health & Genetics, it was called "concerned - need help". I hope all is well in a few days and that the thing the vet heard with his heart is manageable or non existent!

Good luck and good thoughts to you and Poppy!

Karen

Ceana has EIC - I've been watching this post to see if that's what your vet/specialist thought your Poppy might have. As far as I know, Ceana does not have the heart anomaly that you describe your vet talking about, so I'm not sure if it's the same thing. I've been a vet tech for 14 years now, and can tell you that sometimes very stressed animals have a little "backflow" in those heart valves due to increased flow & rate that can sound scary through a stethescope, but can resolve when these factors normalize. If Poppy is like Ceana, she's extremely stressed during these episodes - huge, deep, fast breaths with her neck extended to straighten out that huge trachea and get air into her lungs ASAP, ataxia in back legs especially, increased temp & heart rate, low glucose, and kinda a "checked out" look on her face - which is the first symptom for Ceana, and now I stop exercise as soon as I see it. My vet thought it was hypoglycemia at first, then realized that she just can't metabolize her food efficiently enough to supply her system with the amount of glucose she needs, no matter how recently she's eaten, or if I load her up on sugar at onset. Anyway, if your vet thinks EIC might play a factor in what you saw in Poppy, I'd be happy to write down the treatment regimen that my vet recommended for Ceana - mostly nutriceutical supplements - that make a noticeable difference in her performance & stamina. Best of luck with Poppy's evaluation & diagnoses - I know it's so scary, but hang in there!

Bordercentrics (Kathy and Stewart)are helping me to get Poppy checked out. We are trying to get him into a vet college down in Pullma, WA.

I will keep you all updated. Right now, Poppy is doing alot better. We are just having him take it easy for now, until we can get him in to the vet college.

That's good. I hope you find out what's wrong. I'm sure you'll feel better knowing too. Give him lots of hugs from me and Black Jack

Poppy is doing well. VERY unhappy about not getting to play ball everyday anymore though...lol. I'm just keeping him quiet for now.

Working with (Kathy& Stewart)Bordercentrics on getting him into the Vet College in Pullman, WA.

They have been a great help to our family.

We should hopefully be hearing from the vet college soon. Will keep you all updated.
