Recommended Posts

I asked about pedigree and the few that answered me said they didnt like it at all. so im wondering what kind of dog food i should buy? do i still get puppy food and what kind should i get? I have a walmart here and theres like 4 brands, pedigree ummm the other P one perina(sp) and old roy and a like helthy puppy food, white bag thats all i know lol. I have ranch stores here and im not sure what kind of dog food they have but I could check to see what kind they have that u say is good for dogs. so if you could let me know what kind of food you feed your BC it would be great. im not really into raw right now, might do it later but idk so if you could help me out it would be great.

Thanks

I get my food at one of our local fleet/ranch stores. I feed Nutro Natural Choice. It isn't the best food out there, but I do think it's better than Pedigree, Iams, Ol' Roy, Purina, etc. If you have a Petsmart, Blue Buffalo or Nutro Ultra are excellent choices. Our Petco carries Natural Balance which is also a good choice. Others (in our area are only available at specialty stores) are Canidae, Innova, Nature's Variety, California Natural, and Eagle Pack. Find one that works for your dog-you may have to try a couple different brands before you find one that works for him.

Nutro looks like a pretty good kibble from what I have seen. Please don't feed 'ol Roy dog food!! My Dad fed that to our dogs for a while and they did horrible on it. I can't say enough good things about Exclusive brand dog food. I love it and Black Jack does great on it. I would look for it at some of the feed stores, that's where I get it. Here's the link to their website too. PMI Nutrition I haven't tried their puppy food before, but I do really like their adult food. Just an option.

Quite a number of folks here feed Canidae, which has stated that no imported feedstuffs are used (a relief with recent recalls).

Many people do not feed puppy food at all but a good quality (not anything from Wal-Mart) adult food or, if they feed puppy food at all, only until about three months. So, you might consider going to adult at this time.

Foods I would personally recommend include Canidae, California Naturals and Innova (both by Innova), and some Eagle Pack varieties. Our dogs and our daughter's dogs have all done well on these but some of them are quite pricey. However, as better food will tend to be reflected in better health, the cost is worth it.

Best wishes!

Many farm stores carry Diamond Naturals, which is a pretty decent food for the money, and better than anything you can buy at Wal-mart. I like Canidae, Innova, and California Naturals better, but have fed Diamond Naturals, and my dog did very well on it.

Personally, I'd feed Diamond before Nutro because they don't split the ingredients (ie, rice, rice bran, rice flour), and they have more sources of ment in the first few ingredients compared to Nutro. And it's cheaper then Nutro as well.

ok Thank you all, I will have to check around here to see if we have alot of those kinds to see what works best for him. I know there are alot at our ranch stores. We have a store here that has PMI Nutrition so ill have to check into that.

I just started using Diamond Lamb Meal And Rice Formula about 3 weeks ago. I switched over from the cheaper Diamond food. The pups love it and I can definatly see a better shine to there coats. Yesterday I decided to bring home some colestral milk from the milk barn. Gonna start adding that to there meals also. Its free and I am sure it will add some important vitimans to there diet.

Seems that Canidae and the Nutro all natural lamb and rice are two of the safer ones out there right now.

You can start your pup on adult food right now too. It is better for him believe it or not.

We feed Natural Balance Fish and Potato, and we and the dogs love it. Their coats are super shiny, Hoku's eye snots cleared up right away after switching from Nutro, something in that did not set well with him. I would stay away from anything Walmart sells.

I agree that pretty much anything you can get in Walmart, or grocery stroes like Safeway is pretty poor quality. (Iams, Purina, Beneful, Ol' Roy, Gravy Train, Science Diet, etc.)

Some higher end foods are Innova, Innova EVO, Canidae, Orijen, Natural Balance (though ever since the NB recall I'm wary of it), Timberwolf Organics, Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul, etc. They can be found at some stores like PetCo, Petsmart, small local feed stores, or even ordered from their sites.

If you look up their official sites on google they often have store locaters to see if a store sells them in your area.

Example:

Natura (Innova, California Natural, etc.): http://www.naturapet.com/where-to-buy/

Eukanuba and Pedigree are pretty poor quality foods. I would consider switching to a higher quality food. That's great they're doing "fine" but with a better diet they could exceed how they're doing now. Take a look at the ingredients. It's really something I would stay far away from.

My vet also says that Science Diet is a Good food ..... ROFL.. Vets only say such and such food is good because they get paid to do so.

IN the Reality .... these foods are not really good for our dogs, they are not completely harmful. but they do no good, they are full of "fillers" (stuff to make your dog full) but not many real nutrients. I switched my dogs off of that OVERLY expensive crap onto Nurto Max puppy and I noticed an near instant difference....

altough now with the recalls and such, there is a company who makes its own food in vancouver BC and I forgot the name, but I am looking into them

I feed Canidae, but with all of the recent food scares and deaths, I will be switching to a homemade diet very soon. I have an appointment to consult with my holistic vet about switching over because every time I open a new bag of food I worry that eventually the food that I'm feeding is going to have a problem with it!

Anything you can buy at Walmart or the grocery store is not going to be a good food. And I'd look at the list of brands that are involved with the recent poisonings and stay away from all of them for good.

My vet said that the older dogs should be on a Eukanuba/Pedigree mix. The dogs seems to be fine on it, always healthy at the vet.

Oh gosh. You need to find a new vet. And I thought the Science Diet prescription diet recommendations were bad!

Speaking as an owner who lives in a city (meaning I have to pick up after my dog), I make sure the ingredients don't include corn or wheat in any form. I've noticed the picking-up job gets messier when the food gets grainier.... and that can't be a good sign for the dog's digestive system!

If you are switching over from one food to another, do so gradually to avoid digestive upsets. You can feed 1/4 new food with 3/4 old food for a couple of days, then 1/2 and 1/2, etc. In a week or two, your pup will be on the new food. Just monitor his intake and his output to see that he's eating well and his poop stays reasonable (no constipation, no diarrhea).

With a switch to a more appropriate and better-quality food, you will notice an improvement in coat and often a reduction in the amount of feces produced. You will find that it's well worth the effort and expense to feed something better.

Best wishes!
