bc friend
Katie is fine now. Last weekend I put out fire ant killer (deltamethrin) in the back yard and around the house foundation and blocked the dogs' access to the treated areas. The fire ants are already really bad and they had been biting the dogs (and me). After a couple of days (and seeing dead ant mounds), I hosed off the areas. It has also rained. So I thought it was safe to remove the blocking around the treated areas yesterday. About 10 minutes after I let the dogs out, I heard one of them gagging and found Katie gagging and pawing at her mouth. She had dug out small rocks from around the foundation and licked the underside of them! There was still fire ant killer powder on the bottoms of the rocks.! So I called the Animal Poison Control Center which advised inducing vomiting by using hydrogen peroxide and told me toxicity symptoms to look out for but said she would probably be okay - usually serious toxicity occurs in puppies, small dogs and cats. I gave her an ounce of h.p. every 15 minutes for the first hour and she vomited. I gave her liquids from no food. About 6 hrs. later she started vomiting every 10-15 minutes - however, it was mostly clear liquid and she wasn't showing any other symptoms so I just stayed up with her from midnight to 3 a.m. when she decided to go to sleep! This morning she was a little lethargic so I took her to the vet just to double check - they ran a mini-blood profile for liver and kidney function and CBC. Everything came back normal - the vet felt the vomiting was due to the hydogen peroxide and water she drank during the evening and the lethargy because she didn't get her normal sleep. So, she's fine, my wallet is a little lighter, and I'm kicking myself for not doing a more thorough job of checking to make sure all of the powder was gone before I let the dogs out. I just didn't think about one of the dogs licking the bottom of the rocks. I put poison in the yard and I should have been more careful. I'm just grateful that Katie is okay. Well mistakes happen pure and simple. You did your best to keep your dog safe. Don't be so hard on yourself. Just be thankful everything turned out okay. ShoresDog
Thank goodness Katie's OK. Don't beat yourself up, eh. And thanks for sharing your experience. Someone else might read your description and avoid a similar problem!
Beth G
Glad that she is ok. And I agree, I'm sure that there are people here that can learn from your experience.
WyoBC
I'm glad she's ok. But I know I sure have done stupid stuff that looking back should have been easy to prevent but wasn't. I wouldn't feel to bad. I hope she starts to feel back to normal soon.

BustopherJones
If people did not make mistakes, God would not have put erasers on pencils or invented white-out. Everything turned out okay; and to quote Friedrich Nietzsche, That which does not kill us makes us stronger.
MirageMerle
I've felt like that before too, I think we all have. It's impossible to never make a mistake, so don't beat yourself up too much. I'm sure your kiddos still love you, and they've probably forgotten all about it! - Brooke -
