how alarmed should I be?

Well I thought I was in the clear with recalled food, but yesterday new dog treats were recalled. We use the Ol' roy beef sticks for training, and we are 1/4 of the way through a recalled can.

All 3 dogs have had diarhea, Archie had it so bad, he actually had accidents in the house - he never has done that. Archie and edith are both on thyroid medicine, and that has affected their appetite and poop - I had chalked it up to that. Archie was put on flagyl.

None are lethargic, I had been going heavy on the treats to reward training with the invisible fence, but lately not so much. I've not given them treats but very little for the last week. No one has diarhea any more.

Should I still take them to the vet? or just consider it lucky that they have recovered from whatever had ahold of them.

This is so frustrating to me that the treats were not recalled with the earlier foods, this almost slipped by my attention, they were purchased after the recall. How irresponsible! You either use the wheat gluten in your foods or you don't.

Well lesson learned, no more junk treats here. I just hope my dogs don't have to pay for my cheapness, expecially with 2 13year old senior citizens in my house.

I feel your pain, I wrote last night that I realized I was also giving my dog some biscuits from Sunshine Mills, luckily not spelled out on the list (but they do have wheat gluten), and it was a big wake up call for me about what junk I have been treating him with..... Thought if the food's ok, the treats don't matter... but they do...

I'd say if your dogs are still ok, you shouldn't worry, but better call your vet and ask them what they think, if the dogs need to be seen or not. Hopefuly they weren't affected at all (other than diarhea)

well, I called the vet. They would not give me any feedback whatsoever. I smell lawsuit fears. Not that I blame them too much, sometimes it would be nice to hear opinion from them. All I received was "we cannot tell you what you should do, other then bring them in for bloodwork" Not what I should be looking for in symptoms, no recommendations. I have 3 very perky dogs right now though.

sigh, I might bring archie in since he was the most severely struck. Its a pain bringing in 3 dogs at once.

Denise,

I am terrofied to give my dogs anything now after this whole recall mess, so this is the treats I made for my dogs and they love them just as much as any store bought kind.

I used the following indgredients:

whole wheat flour

natural peanut butter

skim milk

baking powder

Simple stuff, and you have to roll it out so you can cut it into tiny bites or big ones, or whatever.

After the recall, we simply threw EVERYTHING we had in our house away and started over with homemade food and I had to find a treat for them so our local animal sanctuary put out a cookbook for dogs last year, so I got one and have been going crazy making goodies for the dogs and they are lovin' it!

Sorry about your pups! I know I had a few bad moments yesterday when they announced about the biscuits -- I give an occasional biscuit to Allie, but I hadn't used the brand recalled.

If they were my dogs, I would take them in for the blood screening. They can pick up a lot with that and the cost is not too terrible. Especially with senior dogs on other meds.

Good luck!!

Please do take your dogs in for bloodwork and repeat it in a few months even if it is normal. About 75% of kidney function must be lost before signs of renal failure show up. GI upset can be a sign of kidney failure or liver damage and that is how many of the sick animals presented to their vets. Your dogs might be just fine, but better safe than sorry!

I can relate to this too. I was training Riven with Ol Roy dog bones. I had switched both cat and dog to raw 2 days before those treats were recalled! I had given the bag to my next door neighbor, so I ran over to make sure she knew they were recalled.

Pandas mom, we did the same thing. As soon as we realized Science Diet was recalling dry cat food (which we fed Rohan), we immediately that night switched to raw.

Did you end up goin to the vet with Archie?

I agree with Liz P. I am sad to say it was too late for my loveable Amber. We contacted the vet the morning of Sunday march 31st. Lethargic and vomiting small amounts of clear liguid. When we got to his office she started vomiting blood. She was placed on IV, given vitamin K, Carafate for her stomach, Antibiotic, and antinausea drug. I know everything was done her that was humanly possible. I have not heard back from the liver biospy. Saturday we had a great day playing and grooming. I have contacted Purina since we fed dry dog chow, no reply. Please be very careful with you pets. This problem is heart breaking and sickening. jeanne kaster

Jeanne, my heart is completely breaking for you. this recall has me spitting mad.

smileyzookie, no I haven't gotten him in, but only because I had a health crisis of my own this week which has finally thankfully left me. We have had no gastric upset for awhile now - it had stopped by the time I found out about the treats being recalled - I hadn't given them any treats for awhile which might have helped that out. I think I will take Archie in for a blood test next week, but they really have more energy then ever since they've been on a new exercise plan.

At the clinic I work at, one of our vets also works at the emergency clinic. They've seen asymptomatic animals coming up with their blood work all over the place. For that reason, she's recommending that if a dog or cat has eaten any of the recalled food, go ahead and have blood work run just to be safe. If there is a problem, it's much better to catch it early than to wait until problems start showing up.

I worked for a vet for five years and have never seen anything attack a animal like this except poison. My vet called friday the liver was sent off and no signs of toxins on three different tests. I am not sure all of the contaminated foods have been reported. Please watch your pets very closely and thank you for your concern about amber. jeanne kaster
