Guest pax
<fact> The FDA FINALLY issued a stop and detention on all wheat gluten from the company in China that produced the tainted lot. The stop does not differentiate in human food vs non-food grade wheat gluten, it includes both. The company produces both animal and human food additives as a matter of course. </fact> <random Celia moment> All of a sudden I'm wondering where my seitan was made and with what. </random Celia moment>
Journey
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070403/ap_on_..._food_recall_68 Pet food contaminant not in human food By ANDREW BRIDGES, Associated Press Writer WASHINGTON - None of the contaminated wheat gluten that led to the U.S. recall of pet food went to manufacturers of food for humans, the ingredient's importer said Tuesday. The Chinese wheat gluten imported by ChemNutra Inc. all went to companies that make pet foods, Stephen Miller, chief executive officer of the Las Vegas company, told The Associated Press. Miller declined to identify what companies ChemNutra supplied. Nearly 100 brands of cat and dog foods made with the ingredient, since found to be chemically contaminated, have been recalled. Guest pax
So why is the FDA impounding all whear gluten from that company, even the human food grade stuff? Doesn't that seem weird?

Pipedream Farm
The Food and Drug Administration took action against wheat gluten from Xuzhou Anying Biologic Technology Development Co. in Wangdien, China.... Source: FDA blocks wheat gluten from Chinese company The U.S. FDA notice issued Friday said all wheat gluten traced to Xuzhou Anying would be held at customs until the company released results of its investigation, took corrective measures and proved that five consecutive shipments had been cleared of contamination. All gluten from China will be screened, along with that arriving from the Netherlands, through which Chinese gluten is shipped, the notice said. Source: Chinese company probes tainted pet-food link ChemNutra Inc is a US company that imported the tainted wheat gluten from Xuzhou Anying Biologic Technology Development Co. and sold it to US pet food manufacturers but not human food manufacturers. Oh what fun a supply chain can be..... Xuzhou Anying Biologic Technology Development Company Ltd. was named in a notice issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as the source of wheat gluten containing a chemical found in plastics and pesticides. Geng Xiujuan, Xuzhou Anying's sales manager, said the company was aware of the notice and was looking into the accusation that large concentrations of melamine had been found in its wheat gluten, a protein source used as an ingredient in the pet food. However, Ms. Geng said the company based in the eastern province of Jiangsu had not manufactured the gluten but had instead bought it from companies in neighbouring provinces. She said Xuzhou Anying sold it onward to another Jiangsu company, Suzhou Textile Import and Export Co. source: Chinese company probes tainted pet-food Mark
Guest pax
Well, you know, I don't like to be an alarmist. But I also don't think it hurts to pay a little attention, either. I am not an academic. I could be misreading or misunderstanding. I just thought I'd tell you all about the next step in the chain. And the latest latest step in the chain is that the American company the product was shipped to says they sold the wheat gluten to four pet food companies, all identified, and in it's original packaging, unopened. They do produce human food chain gluten, and pharmaceuticals. But they say they didn't sell this company's stuff to anyone but these four pet food companies. So.... There ya go, fwiw. Guest pax
Oops, we cross posted. Thank you, Mark. So they were not the originators of the gluten. Nice.

bc friend
I've been trying not to think of conspiracy theories... sabotage... terrorism practice towards human food, etc.... but still....
Rebecca, Irena Farm
Well, if they wanted to attack the human food supply they screwed up. I can't think of a better way to put us on full alert, than the way this has occured. How long did the spinach and peanut butter sotry last comapered to this? Mabe four days? We're on week three now if memory serves, and still a major network sotry. Doesn't give me warm fuzzies nonetheless. I would almost prefer direct attack to this drawn out CYA driven event. Maralynn
This article was posted on another forum I frequent Bigger than you think: the story behind the pet food recall. I found it to be a very interesting read. I am not into conspiracy theories, but there are more than a few people who have alot of explaining to do on this one
amberkaster
I found the article that Maralyn sited to be very interesting and worthwhile reading. I may be biased since my eight year old border collie became ill and died within 24 hours( April 2nd). The vet called last friday the liver was sent in for three different tox screening and all showed negative. I have emailed Purina but have received nothing but a form letter. jeanne kaster
