Dog tattoos

Recommended Posts

We have a new dog in rescue (Border Collie Rescue of Tampa Bay) who was pulled from Animal Services in Ft. Lauderdale. She was a stray.

Her foster mom found a tattoo on her today. Is it very common for breeders to tattoo their dogs? Or do owners do it, also? Lastly, is there a specific border collie registry? National Dog Registry has already been contacted and they are trying to trace it, but I wondered if someone here might have an idea...

It says "BC 07-522" with a drawing of a heart, in case anyone's interested.

I want to get my dogs done, but I have to find someone who can do it. I was going to get their ABCA number so they can be tracked easily.

I would send out some e-mails with permission to cross post asking if anyone is missing a tattooed dog. If someone took the time to ID their dog they are probably looking for it.

The people Rachel is referring to are the Mantlos out of Richmond, VA. They are very good and tattoo without anesthesia. None of my dogs seemed even mildly discomfited when done. My reason as an owner for tattooing was mainly to indicate that the dog belongs to someone as NC does allow sale of pound dogs for research. I think such organizations are less likely to buy a tattooed animal. Most of my dogs are also microchipped and all of them wear collars that give my name and cell number, as well as the word or words "reward" or "reward offered" in place of the dog's name. I figure I have all bases covered.

As for the dog with the tattoo, I know the Mantlos also keep their own records and it might be worth contacting them (sorry, I don't have that info, but you might be able to Google it) on the outside chance that they did the tattooing (they go to a lot of shows, etc., to do just that, so it *is* quite possible they'd have done out-of-state dogs).

In Canada, CBCA registered dogs must be identified with either a tattoo or a microchip. They are generally tattooed on the inner thigh.

Also, in Canada, it is very common to have your dog tattooed with a clinic code in its ear when you have it neutered. Then the clinic can be contacted if the dog is found, and the owner traced through the clinic. Cats too. It's how we got our cat back after she fell out the window a few years ago. I was surprised to learn that it's not common in the US!

I know it was 12 years ago, but when Oreo got spayed (in Canada, near where RDM is) she also got tattooed in her ear. It was a unique number, I got a card to keep. My dad's eldest cat is also tattooed in his ear.

I had 3 of my older dogs tattooed because of the research scare and also most people that would find a stray wouldn't think of checking for a microchip. Most people that aren't dog people aren't too bright. I'm looking to get mine done now, but it's just not as available as it was back then. And they didn't use any thing but a small numbing didn't hurt them a bit. It was done on their thigh.

I recently had my dogs tattooed--mostly because I wanted something (even slightly) visible so a person looking would see that they're someone's pets in case they ever got lost. They're also chipped and wear leather collars with id tags riveted on. It's really just extra insurance for me. I registered them with Tatoo A Pet (954-581-0079). Taz's tattoo is his ABC number; Sophie Mutt's is my birthdate.

Thanks, everyone.

The Mantlos tattoo for NDR, and their email is tattoodogs@msn.com . They do keep their own records - so if the dog is tattooed on the inner thigh it would be worth a check with them, because not everybody follows up by registering with NDR. Another source to check is Tatoo-a-Pet - You can google their contact info - sorry, I don't have it readily available.

By the way, the Mantlo's will be at Keepstone Farm in Berryville VA on July 14...email me for more info if you want.

Also, I did try to register my dogs with NDR, but they didn't answer phone calls and their website forms wouldn't go through. That's when I found Tatoo-A-Pet, and they said that NDR is going through "difficult times" right now and sort of not really running normally. I don't know if that's true or not. So I registered with tatoo-A-Pet, but honestly I wouldn't expect a finder of my dogs to contact them--I just want a finder to realize they do belong to someone and then maybe have a vet or shelter scan for the microchip (if their collars came off).
