Raw food question

Recommended Posts

One of the stores here in town has had a LOT of various animal parts for sale. I was wondering everyones opinion and how much they feed of each.

Cow Tongue

Cow Tail (sections)

Cow Liver (Yuck)

Pork Kidney

Pork Skin

Pork Feet (Hocks..or however you spell it)

Chicken Feet (I've fed her these as a treat before-how safe are they?)

Im sure there's more I just cant remember it all.

I'd feed any of those except the pork skin in my rotation. I'd be adding in more muscle meat and non-weight bearing bones (ie, ribs, necks). Are you considering raw? And if so, do you have a basic guidline to follow? I can PM you one that I like if you're interested.

My dogs are drooling, reading that list! I think I've fed all those things except the tongue (too expensive around here) and the skin (too fatty, not enough meat). Hands down, the dogs vote for the pork hocks. They LOVE the hocks, and it keeps them busy for an hour or so!

I think they all have virtue but I always worry about oxtail sections getting swallowed whole. Unless I can get long oxtails I pass on them; it's totally a matter of knowing what your dog is capable of. The pork skin is probably overkill if you have other sources of fat-on meats.

I don't feed short feet because they are too small for my comfort level but when I can find unsliced "long feet"--which pretty much go up to and often include the hock or knee and carry quite a bit more meat--I feed them for sure. Hocks are just the joint, at least as I find them locally. Which is okay, too, just too small for my sensibilities.

Chicken feet are a-okay to me. They're safe insofar as anything has some degree of risk no matter how you feed what; the nails should not be an issue.

If you can find pork heart and spleen, they're good, too. Pork spleen is a lot less squishy than beef spleen.

Did you find these at a "regular" supermarket or an ethnic market? I suppose it all depends on where you live but the "regular" stores in my area seem to beat a wide path around these body parts." What good fortune for you!

No, no gas or loose stools. Pork hocks aren't as fatty as, say, ribs. They seem to be mostly bone, skin and meat. Plus. the only thing that provokes that in my dogs are roast beef (Bear) and lettuce wraps (Lou). Nothing can upset Wick's tummy. I won't list all the things that she has eaten, with no ill effects. As my mom says, she is a 'junkyard dog'.

The only problem I ever had with pork hocks is that Bear pooped in the agility ring once, the day after consuming a very large hock. So, er, don't feed them the day before a trial (smacks self in forehead).

Here's Wick enjoying a pork hock a few summers ago:

I fed large (really large) beef bones the other day and the following morning Piper pooped in the hallway while we were waiting for the elevator. She was so mortified that when we got outside she ralphed. Poor thing. I find the extra bone content is what does it. Causes more pooping more often.

I found them at a grocery store called "Paul's". Mountain Home is largely a latin community, and they use a great amount of excess that I know most of my family and friends wouldnt use. My hubby is Guatemalan, so he's explained lots of icky stuff lol. Anyway, Wal-mart and Albertsons (the other 2 here) steer clear of most of that stuff. Albertsons once in a while has tripe (bleached) and hocks but thats about it.

Wow lots of good info!!!!

Walmart here has cow tongue, liver and pig feet and ears and other stuff like that!

And as a personal note, liver is yummy  Calf or chicken liver! (OK, it's probably my Easter European heritage speaking here...) And my mom prepares a mean cow tongue with black olives in tomatoe sauce :D

Chicken feet make me puke :D

Too bad I have a much stronger stomach than Ouzo has :D

someone told me that chicken bone is better and safer than beef or pork bones....how?

"Better" is kind of subjective, but certainly raw bones from young chickens are easier to dismantle than beef bones (I don't feed ANY beef bones as edible) and are often softer than pork bones as well. But generally speaking, pork bones are easy to chomp for most dogs.

"Safer" is also kind of subjective, but experience has showed me that chicken bones (with meat on of course) are easily crunched and digested, even for pups or new dogs. That's sort of how I see "safer."

I saw chicken feet for sale in an Asian grocery store, labelled "CHICKEN PAWS"

One thing not on your list but that you might come across is cow feet. I decided to give them a miss, as there isn't much meat there. Whenever I have questions about something new, I do a search of the Yahoo rawfeeding list and an answer always turns up.

I can also PM you a basic guideline. I went to the store and bought about 80 dollars worth of meat for the dog and cat. I got all of these:

Two lamb tongues

One beef liver

4 lamb kidneys

5 whole roaster chickens with giblets

Two packages of chicken necks

One pound of chicken liver

3 rabbits

One pork roast

Four packages of chicken feet

Four packages of pork hearts (8 total)

8 whiting fish

6 packages of chicken quarters (24 total)

This should last the two of them about three months, depending on how much I plan to feed them, and the amount I fast Joy. I usually feed one chicken quarter and an eighth of a pound (I eyeball it, about 15 chicken or one quarter beef) liver and add on stuff like canned green tripe (I fed it for the first time and nearly puked at the smell), hearts, breast, shanks, about 7 feet. or a fish. Or there are days when I only feed a whole chicken.

Why do I keep reading the boards during breakfast? Should have learned by now... :D

I'd feed all of those too! Raw pork isn't safe for dogs over here (it can carry the Aujezky virus which is deadly for cats and dogs), but since it seems to be okay in the US I'd feed that too.

Chicken feet, yum :D... I never came across any of those in a shop. Legs, yes. But feet  ........I'm sure the dogs would love them though!
