  1. Hello!! My puppy's name is Niko, he is 6 months old (7 on 02/19). I have started to worry because I feel he is getting very heavy and I have compared his weight to charts online and he is way above average. He measures 19 inches (49cm) from his paw to the top of his butt and he is currently 36.2 lbs (16.5kg). On 01/11 he weighted 33.4 lbs (15kg). I was told by the breeder his dad weighs 55lbs. I don't feel I over feed him and we are very active! I do 1 3/4 cup of kibble (wellness puppy formula) per day plus his training treats (pea size pieces of chicken or hot dogs). How much did your pups weigh at this age? Thank you!
  2. Hello!! I have also been struggling a lot with my 15 week old Puppy biting (it started getting rough), up until this week actually! We tried the helping and the redirecting to a toy and those didn't work. One of the tips they gave me in this forum was to put him in a time out in his kennel/crate, NOT as punishment though! Niko is pretty used to his kennel now, as we always feed him in there (door is always open) and sometimes play crate games, throw a ball in there or hide a toy/treat for him to find. Whenever Niko starts biting and growling I try to get him to sit/down, and say in the most calm voice I can "looks like you must be tired and in need of a time out, let's go to kennel" he immediately stops biting and slowly releases the bite, then we get him inside the kennel. There is absolutely no whining, he instantly sits or lies down, we let him chill for a little and once we see he has calmed down, we let him out. Other thing that's worked for us is working with 'place'. When he starts biting I say very calmly "Niko, place" and he slowly goes to his place and lies down, he stays for no more than 30 seconds but i feel it resets his behavior! We started with this method about a week ago, and i have noticed we are having less of these moments.
  3. Got it! Thank you again, these tips are so useful as always. We already put his food bowl in the kennel, sometimes I play fetch with him and throw the ball in there too, he is starting to like it, I can tell because sometimes he takes his toys in there to play (door is always open unless we put him there) and then naps in there. The 'place' thing sounds really good! I'll include this in our training.
  4. Thanks Michael! I am actually trying to teach him his toys names to eventually hide them for him to find, still no success tho lol. We have the tug toy, everytime he starts using his teeth on us we grab it (have tried with his other toys too) to divert his attention to it but it's like he doesn't care about them. We have already scheduled evaluation classes to eventually start an obedience course, but they are not until next week.
  5. Thank you D'Elle! I was actually afraid that that would be a thing... To get him used to always do something. I will start working on time out with him, my question is, should we put him in the kennel for this? I was told that the kennel should not be used for time out/punishment as it is a place he should like? Is this true? I'll also stop with the stairs exercise, i didn't think about it enough and you are right. I'm now looking up kiko pup! Thank you so much!!
  6. Hi everyone! Lili here! My puppy's name is Niko, he is 14 weeks old. He is our first border collie so I'm gonna be posting many more questions! This time it's about indoor activities recommendations. For now this is the activities we have been doing DAILY with him and it was kind of working. •20-30 minutes outside playing ball with us. •About 2 training sessions (1 in the afternoon and 1 at night), each of about 5 minutes •He plays with his treat puzzle for about 5 minutes. •One 10 minute walk. The rest of the day he is sleeping, playing with his toys or doing more fetch with us. Today we weren't able to go out for his 20 minute play time because of the rain. After 6pm he started getting crazy, we had already done all the activities (i also tossed the ball down the stairs for him to fetch and come back up a couple of times). I know this is for the lack of physical activity, and I hate myself for not taking him out today and with winter coming up I'm afraid there's gonna be way more of these days! So what are some indoor activities i can do to substitute for his activity outside? When I say he started acting crazy I mean it! He grabs our feet/arms and starts growling and pulling quite hard. He had never done it this bad until today.
  7. Thank you all so much for your replies! Everything is really valuable info, I will keep everything in mind and make the necessary changes to keep him safe and healthy.
  8. Hello everyone! Lili here We got Niko 2 weeks ago, he is such a lovely boy! Very energetic, super smart and sweet! I have so many questions though. I have read so many articles about border collies and we scheduled a visit to a training school but it's until mid November. So I was wondering if you guys could help us out in the meantime. Here is out daily routine: 1. We live in an 2 story apartment, he is with me the whole day (I am unemployed atm) the only times he goes out during the day is to go potty (we make it short because he is still missing his last shot and is in the process of deworming). We also take him out to a park to play ball, he runs lose for about 20-30 minutes, we try to do it everyday. I do 15 minute command training sessions with him maybe twice a day but I lose his attention so quickly. Any ideas on how I can get him to focus more? And ideas of more mental exercises? He still has so much energy at night so I figured maybe I should be doing more of those... I go running everyday but I know I have to wait till he is a year old at least to bring him with me, is this right? Also everyday he is playing with an older dog (who is up to date with his shots and doesn't hang out with other dogs and is not outside much), about 2 hours per day and I can tell it exhausts Niko so much but he takes a nap and is ready to go again. 2. He never goes one full night without having to go pee, he wakes up at 3am to go, is this normal for his age? He does drink a lot of water, his water bowl is always full, should I be taking it away after certain hour? 3. He doesn't like sleeping on the bed with us for more than a couple hours (which is fine) and then he goes to sleep right by the front door, i think he just gets too warm, so I got him an elevated bed, any thoughts on those? I am following advices from online sites to get him to sleep on it but still no success. He only gets on it to bite on the tubes and then gets off. 4. We bought him so many toys (kong, tug o war rope, balls, squeeky stuff) but he doesn't mind them, he just wants to chew on wood and metal!? He also loves playing with plastic bottles (which we stuffed with rice to make a kind of shaker). 5. I feed him Diamond Puppy (purple bag) dry food (which is what the person we got him from was giving him) I asked the vet and she said as long as it wasn't grain free, it's fine. But does anyone know if it's actually good for him? I give him 1/2 cup 3 times a day. 6. Last thing, he gets so sick while on the back seat of the car, he vomits when we put him there, so for now (while he still fits) i put him on the floor of the passenger's side. He is growing so fast so pretty soon he will have to go in the back, any ideas how to make him feel better there? Overall, what do you think of this routine? Are we missing something?! Any tips you guys could give us would be so appreciated! I am so determined to make him the best pup he can be and willing to do whatever necessary. Thanks in advance!
